One of the most common questions we receive at Baran Company Limited is: which cement grade should I use? The answer depends on your application ÔÇö and getting it right can be the difference between a structure that stands for generations and one that develops cracks within months.
Understanding Cement Grades
In Kenya, cement is classified under the KS EAS 18 standard. The two grades you will encounter most frequently are:
- Grade 32.5N ÔÇö Normal early strength. Suitable for general construction work.
- Grade 42.5N ÔÇö Higher early strength. Required for demanding structural applications.
When to Use Grade 32.5N
Grade 32.5N (previously known as Grade 32.5R or OPC 32.5) achieves a compressive strength of at least 32.5 MPa at 28 days. It is the workhorse cement for most residential construction tasks:
- Foundation footings and strip foundations
- Ring beams and plinth beams
- Masonry mortar (brick and block laying)
- Internal and external plaster and render
- Floor screeds and slab oversite
It is more economical than Grade 42.5N and is KEBS certified for all the above applications. Bamburi Cement and Savannah Cement are leading brands stocked by Baran Company in this grade.
When to Use Grade 42.5N
Grade 42.5N achieves a minimum compressive strength of 42.5 MPa at 28 days. It is mandatory or strongly recommended for:
- Suspended reinforced concrete slabs
- Columns under heavy axial load
- Pre-cast concrete elements
- High-strength concrete mixes (above C25)
- Civil structures such as bridges and retaining walls
Mix Ratios Matter
Regardless of grade, the correct mix ratio is equally important. A common mistake is using Grade 42.5N with a weak mix ratio ÔÇö negating the advantages of the stronger cement. Always follow your structural engineer's specifications for mix design.
